KYLE WAS ABOUT to leave for the base for the day when he received word that General Horton wanted to see him. Kyle checked his watch and sighed. He’d made plans to meet Fiona at the gate and head to town for dinner and a movie.

Saying no to his commanding officer wasn’t an option. Not sure how long he’d be, he sent Fiona a text telling her not to wait. He’d meet her at the bungalow as soon as he could get away.

“Go in,” The general’s secretary told Kyle as he walked into the administration building. “He just finished a call with the pentagon and is waiting in his office for your arrival.”

General Horton greeted Kyle with the offer of a drink.

“After hours,” he observed while pouring himself a whiskey.

“Water for me, sir. I’m driving.”

“Good man.” Horton laughed. “Help yourself.”

“Thank you, sir.”

“One of the perks of getting to my level is a personal driver. Makes enjoying a smooth glass of eighty proof possible. Necessary, after the shit I waded through today.”

Kyle remained standing until the general settled behind the antique oak desk. Taking a seat, he opened a bottle of water, took a sip, and waited.

Horton tapped a finger on the rim of his glass. After a moment, he leaned back in his chair.

“I understand you’re dating another officer.”

“Lieutenant Martin,” Kyle answered without hesitation.

“Fiona.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good soldier.”

“One of the best.” Kyle kept his expression neutral. “Is there a problem?”

“Technically, no. There are no regulations against officers seeing each other on their downtime.”

Kyle knew the rules. He checked. Twice. But he had the feeling General Horton objected for some reason. Why else would he broach the subject in the first place?

“Not many young men with your lack of education make the rank of captain before their twenty-fifth birthday.”

Lack of education to a man like General Horton meant Kyle didn’t attend a military academy.

“You have a GED? Am I correct?”

“Yes, sir.”

The fact was that Kyle didn’t finish high school. He and his brothers moved around too often to get a formal education. But they studied hard and read every book they could get their hands on.

With Bowie pushing hard, each brother eventually passed the General Educational Development test. Kyle joined the army the day after he turned eighteen.

“You’re a smart young man.”

“I was lucky, sir.”

“Luck, my ass.” Horton snorted. “I’ve seen a lot of back door promotions in my day. Not that I approve.”

Kyle knew for a fact that General Horton’s son recently achieved the rank of Colonel after fifteen years of what higher placed officers than him described as a lackluster military career.

Some might say the General’s son earned his promotion. Kyle wouldn’t be one of them.

If Horton wanted to play innocent, Kyle wouldn’t be the one to argue. Calling his commanding officer a hypocrite might give him a temporary adrenaline kick. But he didn’t want to spend the six months left before he retired pushing papers at the North Pole.

“Have you thought about your future?” Horton didn’t give Kyle a chance to answer.
